Rainbow Coachella Hair

April 22, 2017

Two week’s ago I decided I would change my hair again for Coachella. Except this time I didn’t choose just one colour, I chose 6. My aim was to create a rainbow balayage effect and have one side warm tones and the other side cool tones. At first I was worried my hair wouldn’t last through another run of bleach/powder lightener through the hair but fear not I was convinced by the professional staff at RAW salon by Anthony Nader that all would be fine. Without further ado let me take you through my journey to the perfect unicorn hair!
I visited the RAW salon by Anthony Nader at approximately 9am. The salon is located on Commonwealth Street in Surry Hills which is conveniently located near the CBD. I’ve had my hair styled here previously and the name of my colourist and stylist is Brendon (he did an amazing job with the rainbow hair so make sure to ask for him if you’re going there).

RAW salon’s staff service is amazing. They take care of you by offering you a wide range of drinks and constantly check in with you to see if they can do anything to make your experience at their salon as luxe as possible.

The first thing to note is that I had regrowth from the last time I bleached my hair. When I say regrowth it wasn’t just a tiny bit it was a LOT. The problem I had with bleaching hair or coloured light hair is the maintenance level. It is very very high because you have to keep bleaching the roots again and again. I spoke about my concerns to Brendon and we agreed that I should keep my dark roots and add highlights with colour to make it look less “regrowthy”. So that’s exactly where we started, we did the highlights and later followed by overall bleaching of the rest of the hair.

During this process you are also put under a small moving heat machine. This will help speed up the process of the bleaching. This usually takes approximately 1-2 hours and then your hair is washed.

To go to cooler tones you really need light blonde hair, this is why before this I could only do warm tones such as pinks/purples/reds/oranges. Thanks to Brendon lightening my hair I’m now able to have cooler tones such as greens/blues/greys. This time I chose to do all the colours. Pink, red, orange, purple, blue, green, yellow.

To obtain the gradient effect Brendon applied the top layer first and then the middle layer and finally the bottom layer. This is done by hair sections and is quite time consuming but this is the only way for it to be done properly. Once the hair section is done, a plastic wrap is put onto that section so it does not touch or affect the uncoloured hair. This process takes approximately 2-3 hours. The reason it takes this long is because of the separation of each section of hair and the fact that each section must be individually layered and blended by hand.

This is the final look! So what do you all think? Is my hair ready for Coachella?

Wow, I am beyond impressed by your hair stylist! Achieving this type of unicorn or rainbow hair on dark, Asian hair is virtually impossible without damaging it and he successfully managed to do it and it looks unbelievable! Not only does your hair look amazing, but it looks healthy and shiny too. Seriously I am floored by his talent and this salon. Sounds like such a long and committed process but the staff and the salon and Brendon make it worthwhile to say the least. I am obsessed with the vibrant colors of your hair and have no doubt you will be the star of Coachella! Can’t wait to spot your hair in all the pics! xoxo, Christine

    Omg your hair looks amazing!
How cool would it be to wake up and have hair like this !
I’ve done every color under the sun when I was younger he he I’m not as young as I look but due to maintenance I stick mostly to blonde as it’s a bit easier to upkeep.
They did a amazing job on your hair and it certainly takes a talented hairdresser to do that I would go to their salon but I’m not in Sydney, enjoy your beautiful hair!

Being convinced by the team at RAW probably was the best decision you could make for Coachella, although I understand it must be really strainful for your hair as well as a VERY long and hard process to get that perfect result which you did. You didn’t have to suffer too much hardship though as you were pampered by this gorgeous salon and the results speak for themselves. I hereby name you my personal unicorn! 🙂

Mandy I am absolutely in love with your hair colour! It looks so gorgeous on you and you pull this look off so perfectly. I am so amazed at how RAW salon have helped you achieve this beautiful hair colour. I have seen so many people try the rainbow hair colour trend, but honestly your result is one of the best ones. Even though you have six different hair colours, but I love that the colours blend together so perfectly. And best of all your hair looks so healthy :). I am totally visiting RAW salon when I visit Australia. Also looking forward to more pictures from Coachella and your trip :).

I’d say you are surely Coachella ready! It gives me all the summer feels too! I just love it! I was naturally blonde for most of my life and at some point ending up turning darker and after having children. it was just too much maintenance to keep my roots at bay! So I feel you on that! I’m not sure if I missed this somewhere in your post or not but just how long do you think that will last? Is it semi-permanent? I’d love to do something funky and fun like this! It seems like the salon really took the time to cater to you as well and the blending of the colors is just perfect!

Girl, you were really brave to do such a big change, haha! I’d never have the guts, but happily this hairstyle totally suited you! I loved it and with curls it looks even sweeter. The RAW salon did such a great job with providing a perfect hair dye like this. Have a lovely day! xx

Omg girl, how many beautiful colors. I never saw before similar hair. It’s very nice to see on you and for Coachella I think was perfect place where wear this hair. Congrats for the hairstylist for the good and difficult job. The final waves or curls are gorgeous.

Oh Mandy! Your unicorn hair is absolutely perfect for the summer, you are so Coachella ready! The salon sounds amazing, the amount of dedication they take into assuring that you’re not worrying about the health of your hair and any questions you may have is what I look for in a salon. Brendon sounds like the perfect stylist. I agree that it takes so much maintenance when you want to maintain your hair color because you constantly have to touch up your roots every two months! Not only does it take a long time every session it’s also extremely expensive overtime. I love how you were able to use colder tones after you toned down your hair from all the warmer hues. The mix of warm and cold together makes for one unbelievable result babe.
I’m curious though, how have you been holding up on the lasting power of the colors? I know usually when you go so bright and vibrant the colors are more likely to fade out !

  • Darlene April 27, 2017 at 1:03 PM

    HI, Mandy!

I first saw this on your Instagram story and I was so hooked. you look so pretty and I was so curious about the turned out. Maybe you could give us an update on how to maintain it? I’m sure a lot of girls would love to copy this and of course, I am worried about the maintenance. I can’t wait to see it getting attention in Coachella. you rock!

Oh, my godness!! You take so much calculated risk on your hair it is amazing and I LOVE IT! The rainbow hair is not something that everyone can pull off, especially being an asian girl and somehow it looks really good on you. It is perfect for Coachella and I’m sure you’ve gotten a few head turns when you were at the festival! Thanks for documenting and sharing your whole experience with us, now we know what it is like to have rainbow hair.

You made a fabulous decision. I am loving your hair and I think you changed it at the perfect time for Coachella. I still have yet to get to that awesome festival, but I am hoping I get there soon. I think your hair looks amazing too by the way, and I love how you just decided to change it up. One thing about hair is it will always grow back and you can always change the color. I would love to color my hair all those colors but I might end up with no hair by the end. That would damage my hair so bad. You are so lucky you can do that with your hair.

  • Hadasah April 29, 2017 at 12:45 AM

Aww I LOVEEEE your hair sweetie. Having the 6 rainbow colors was such a great idea for Coachella!
And, I’m so glad it came out so perfect for the festival 🙂
I’ve never been to the festival, but would definitely love to come there next time!
    Have a lovely weekend,
    love xx

I literally adore this rainbow/holography hair trend so much! And I’m about to diy my hair purple very soon. I really love the result you’ve got, it’s just perfect for Coachella, and it looks amazing on you! Brendon did an amazing job! I wish I had my personal hairdresser like Brendon! Although I’m not sure if I dare diy my hair rainbow, but I’d definitely go for some blues and purples.

    Cheers, Eliza |
